Two super tenors join the Chorus under the Bursary Scheme

5 September 2025

Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus is supporting two fantastic tenor singers from the University Chamber Choir. Joseph Banerjee and Chris Kingdom both joined the scheme andf had such a good time they have signed up for another season.

“We are absolutely thrilled to welcome Joe and Chris again this season” said Chorus Chair Jo Briddock, “They are terrific singers with a really dedicated approach – so they’ve settled into the choir really well.  We are so lucky to have them!”

The scheme offers successful applicants the opportunity to sing with the Chorus without having to pay the usual subscription fee, and in fact they are paid a small fee for each concert, as long as they attend at least 50% of rehearsals associated with each concert, including the compulsory rehearsals, ie, the conductor’s piano rehearsal and the on-the-day rehearsal.

“We are enjoying this season already” said Joe, “I’m particularly loving Cassie Whites piece for music like the sea – a cracking work! It’s going to sound amazing!”

Cassie won second place in last year’s Stella Jockel Young Composer Competition, and the Chorus were keen to sing her piece as it’s so beautiful – though not easy to sing! The first concert, at St Marie’s cathedral, features a number of fantastic works, including Lili Boulanger’s Hymne au Soleil and the rarely-performed Messe Solennelle by French composer Jean Langlais for choir and double organ – a real treat for lovers of choral and organ music.  See Current Season for more details.
