Bass Dr William Smyllie decided to mark the 75th anniversary of the Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus by writing a history of the Chorus, of which he has been a member for over 70 years. The result is a substantial and fascinating work – almost 100 pages of Chorus history from first beginnings with pre-Chorus choirs from 1864 to the 75th anniversary year of 2010.
The book includes information about the huge choral festivals that were held from 1896 to 1936, the building of the City Hall in 1932, the close relationship that developed with Sir John Barbirolli and the Halle over in Manchester, and a wealth of detail about choral works performed in Sheffield and beyond.
The book costs £10 including postage and packing, and can be purchased by contacting
