75th Anniversary Season: 2010-11

2010 sees the Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus celebrating its 75th year. The Chorus was founded in 1935 as the resident chorus for the new Philharmonic Society's series of concerts in Sheffield City Hall and was formed from two Sheffield choirs whose origins date back to the 1860s.

The membership is now nearly 200-strong and concerts during the 2010-11 anniversary season will feature many of the most magnificent and popular choral works, including Brahms: German Requiem and Elgar: The Dream of Gerontius, both with the Hallé Orchestra; both Mozart: Requiem and Verdi: Requiem; two Christmas concerts with Ian McMillan and the Grimethorpe Colliery Band; and Walton: Henry V with the chorus' patron, actor Samuel West.

We hope you will come to hear the chorus during this celebratory season;  even if you are not a regular visitor to Sheffield’s City Hall (recently refurbished to its original glory), then why not make this year the one you venture into pastures new and discover a wonderful world of classical music? – you’ll never look back. Mind you, we are not just to be found in formal concert halls. As ever, we will also be out and about in smaller venues, so remember keep your eyes peeled and you could be "sure of a big surprise".

75th Anniversary Celebration Concert

Our 75th Anniversary Celebration takes place on Saturday 18th June 2011 in the stunningly refurbished City Hall Ballroom. Commemorative book Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus 1935 – 2010

Bill Smyllie, currently one of our longest-standing members, has gathered together tales of the Chorus, along with some rare photographs that span the 75 years of the Chorus.

It was launched at the City Hall at the Chorus’ Brahms’ Requiem concert on 8 May.  Stories in the book bring the history of the Chorus, and indeed of Sheffield, to life.  At a credit crunching sum of just £6 it is a fine addition to any bookshelf.
