The Need for Friends of SPC

Concerts of the quality performed by Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus, in venues such as the City Hall, are extremely costly and make the Chorus highly dependant, financially, on the promoters who underwrite them. Our hope for the future is to stage additional concerts of our choice which will require funds much higher than those currently available. It is hoped that an energetic and collaborative Friends organisation will help to make this possible.

SPC has been representing Sheffield regionally and nationally since 1935. Recent high profile examples of this include the Chorus’s contribution to BBC One’s Songs of Praise broadcast on 5th December 2010 and in 2011 broadcasts on BBC Radio 3 of Beethoven’s 9th Symphony and Liszt’s Dante Symphony, both with the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra under the baton of Gianandrea Noseda. Our aim is always to produce a quality product for our audience.

The next Seventy five glorious years………….

Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus is beginning a new phase but as this opens it faces new challenges not least that of remaining financially viable in an increasingly competitive commercial climate. The Chorus is a registered charity and currently receives no statutory or corporate funding. Contrary to some popularly held beliefs SPC is rarely paid for performing in concerts, either at the City Hall or further afield. In most cases the singing members effectively invest their money as well as their voices in the performances heard and enjoyed by its audiences.

Managing a large symphony chorus is complex and has, therefore, always been in the hands of a knowledgeable and experienced voluntary committee chosen from singing members. After long deliberation, the Committee has concluded that the most appropriate way to help secure the future is to accept outside help from individuals keen to support the Chorus both financially and practically. Essentially we hope that our Friends will provide for the longevity of the Chorus, promote concerts and help us find both new members and sponsors provide support at our concerts and events.

Join us in our new venture, The Friends of Sheffield Philharmonic Chorus, which we hope will help to guarantee the future of the Chorus for the next 75 years.
