A group of singers from the Chorus will sing an eclectic mix of unaccompanied choral works on Fargate as part of Sheffield’s contribution to BBC Music Day on Thursday 26 September 2019.
The fourth Sheffield Makes Music is an official part of the BBC’s annual UK-wide programme of events celebrating the power of music to change lives, with free events scattered across the city centre from 11am-7pm. It has been organised by the University of Sheffield in partnership with BBC Music Day and supported by Sheffield BID, Sheffield City Council, Orchard Square, Yellow Arch Studios and The Leadmill.
The Chorus kicks off the On Fargate event at 11am with a wonderful mix of choral works, including the Hallelujah Chorus, which they will perform with the world-famous Black Dyke Band at the Victoria Hall on 20 April 2020. Also on the programme will be Hail Smiling Morn, which the Chorus recorded with Black Dyke Band some years ago and which has become a favourite of both singers and listeners.
‘We are thrilled to contribute a group of singers for the Fargate event’ said Chorus Chairman Paul Henstridge. ‘It’s especially good to be part of a free event that enables passers-by to experience classical music outside the usual concert hall and alongside other types of music. As Classical Sheffield members we are always keen to take part in events that help to dispel the myth that classical music is stuffy and not for everyone’
Paul will be interviewed by BBC Radio Sheffield just before the 11am kick-off, so tune in around 10.15 to hear more about the Chorus and it’s contribution to events like this.
With music being made in the Leadmill, Orchard Square, Yellow Arch Studios as well as on Fargate, the city centre will be the place to be on Thursday, so come on down and experience live music as you’ve never heard it before.
